Village of Richfield Referendums

Madison... Rep. Bob Gannon, R-Slinger, was contacted regarding the referendums

occurring in the Village of Richfield in April. It was pointed out to him that his name was

being used to support a referendum that would call for local term limits. Representative

Gannon made this statement regarding the referendums: “I favor state and federal term limits of 12 years for a multitude of reasons, though I do not see the same reasons applying at the local, county or school board level. At the state and federal level, there are usually many contenders for the seats which means term limits are needed to allow others to serve their districts. This is not usually the case for local seats, which have fewer applicants and therefore do not need term limits to ensure continual rotation of those serving their district “There is also a significant compensation package that comes with working for the state or federal government as a representative; which is clearly not applicable to local officials. State and federal representatives may be beholden to lobbyists and special interest groups, such as GM and Coca-Cola, each of whom lobbied at the state level this year. This is generally unheard of at the local level. "I do not support term limits on a local level, and if I were a resident in the Village of Richfield, I would vote no on this referendum. The other referendum deals with increasing the size of the board, of which I have no opinion and will thus refrain from commenting on.”
